What we offer our members
What does Edgemead Runners offer their members?

Our motto is “Fitness and friendship”.
The club was founded in 1992 but at that stage surely no one would have believed the importance of these words. Our motto is actually saying that we need to make time to be healthy and to make and maintain our friendships in the days that we are living in. By adhering to our motto how can one go wrong?

Club night
The first Tuesday of each month is the club’s social get-together night where all members have the opportunity to bring their families along and enjoy the evening. Runners who excelled in the previous month are rewarded at these evenings. Although the club does not have a main sponsor, the rewards that these runners receive are made possible by the Tygervalley branch of Sportsmans Warehouse and Marc Smith, one of our members. Marc provides running supplements and running gear every month in the form of GU, GU2O and Brooks running shoes on alternative months.

Social events
Other social events include two annual pasta gatherings prior to Two Oceans and Comrades Ultra Marathons, the family weekend away which the club subsidises and social gatherings such as motivational speakers and demonstrations aimed at family and friends.

Event organisation
Edgemead Runners assist or host a number of prominent annual road races. This includes The Womens Day Challenge - 10km and 5km (fun run) and the Runners Memorial Race.

The Womens Day Challenge is held on the 9th of August which celebrates National Women’s Day and each year a different charity benefits financially from this event.

The Runners Memorial Race is held annually on the 31st of December and the purpose of this race is to pay tribute to all runners who have passed away. Edgemead Runners assisted the Lion’s Club with hosting the Tygerberg Street Mile and “Right for Sight” benefited financially from this event this year.

Before, during and after these events club members pledge their support and devote their time to the success of these races by offering to attend meetings, help with entries and registration, be parking marshals, route marshals and assisting at watering tables on the day of the event.
